Designer Joyce Young on her OBE and great tips for wedding dress shopping

Scottish wedding dress designer and businesswoman, Joyce Young talks to CC Says about being awarded an OBE for services to the textiles industry.

Glasgow School of Art graduate, Joyce and husband Maurice started business in the 90s and their by Storm brand has grown into one of Scotland's top bridal boutiques.

Providing brides with unique, one-off styles coupled with a first-class service, Joyce Young is also the chosen designer for many celebrities.

Eight years ago, Joyce also launched Tartan Spirit  - a range which caters specifically for tartan weddings.

And in a bid to provide the Joyce Young brand for all price groups, the businesswoman has recently opened an outlet store in Maryhill, which is brimming with beautiful Mother-of-the-Bride outfits, wedding dresses and accessories - all of which are at great prices.

Speaking about the moment that Joyce found out she discovered she had been awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honour's List, Joyce said: "The very official looking envelope came in the post to the shop - my immediate reaction was disbelief.

"I looked at the envelope to see if it had come in to the wrong address and re-read, and re-read it and still didn’t take it in.

"It came in five weeks prior to the publishing of the New Year Honours list and had to be kept a complete secret until December29.

"Only my husband knew, we didn’t even tell the family at Christmas".

Joyce added: "Obviously I am thrilled to receive this recognition for me and very talented team. "I’ve had some lovely e mails and letters and personal ones of congratulations from Alex Salmond and Lena Wilson,Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise.

"It hasn’t really properly sunk in yet".

And being Scotland's top bridal and womenswear designer, what will Joyce Young OBE be wearing to the ceremony?

Joyce said: "I will have to think of a couple of options depending on weather but the main thing for me is that it is comfortable and doesn’t crease and I find

comfortable shoes that I can walk backwards in!"

With the wedding season fast approaching, Joyce lets CC Says into some of her favourite styles.

She said: "I love lots of our dresses this season we have a real variety of styles. I particularly like the 50’s silk and lace dresses but then again I also like the 30’s inspired bias cut dresses. "Each different bride brings her own personality to a dress and when it all comes together I fall in love with the dress all over again!"

Newly opened in August last year, The Outlet Store has been a great success.

Speaking about her newest store, Joyce said: "The Outlet Store is a great space to display our ex sample wedding dresses and mother of the bride/groom outfits.

"Like any sale it is a matter of luck if we have the dress of your dreams. Wedding dress prices are mainly below £500 but you need to come with an open mind as it is difficult to go to a sale with exact requirements on style , colour and size.

"We have had lots of delighted brides since we opened in August who have found amazing bargains with no compromise."

Joyce added: "It’s a real Aladdin’s Cave. A girly treat!"

Joyce Young shares with CC Says readers three valuable pieces of advice for brides looking for the perfect dress

1. Do your homework online and choose the shops with the best reputations who have dresses within your budget. Ask your friends which shops they visited and get feedback on service. Don’t visit too many shops and get confused. If you do the initial work online you shouldn’t have to trail round the shops.

2. Don’t take too many people to your appointments. It’s about what you like and suit not what your friends like. If possible take your mother who will usually give truthful advice.

3. Make sure your hair is done nicely and you have some make up on and nice underwear. This makes such a difference to how you look and feel in a dress. Be prepared to change your mind from what you thought might suit you. Sometimes the most unlikely dress on the hanger turns out to be THE one and it wasn’t what you thought you were going to wear. Be open minded and ENJOY the experience it should be a HAPPY time not stressful.
